IAG Business School was founded in 1978, as part of the Social Sciences Center of PUC-Rio. It offers undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and executive programs. It has three research centers and several independent lines of research. IAG is a founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Management (ANPAD), which includes all graduate-level programs in the country.

The faculty has around 120 members. Many professors hold a PhD degree from some of the best universities in Brazil and around the world. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, professors are expected to engage in consulting activities in order to remain attuned to the changing needs of the business community. These activities are carried out by IAG Consulting.

A field in which IAG has developed special skills is distance learning programs, which are seen as an important tool to serve the needs of a country as large as Brazil. These programs are typically in-company. During the last five decades, IAG Business School has educated more than 50,000 business professionals, many of whom now occupy top positions in domestic and multinational firms and government organizations.
